Before viewing the funny Wine Memes below, I wondered when and were memes originated. To start with, at first I even wasn’t sure what the definition was for a meme. One acceptable definition of mem is the ability to take a serious moment and turn it into something humorous.
To find the use of the word meme, you have to go back to 1976. It is at this time, Biologist Richard Dawkins published his book “The Selfish Gene”. In this book, he proclaimed ideas were like organisms” with the ability to spread and mutate. He went on to annotate that some ideas are more successful at speeding (today its called becoming “viral”). Subsequently, Dawkins named this idea “mimeme” in Greek meaning “that which is replicated”. Later he shortened it to meme, because it sounds similar to genes which can be replicated.
Meme Officially Defined
Even though Dawkins coined the word in his book, it wasn’t until 1998 when it earned a spot in a dictionary. Specifically, meme was included in the 1998 update of the Tenth Edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary. Then in 2015, Merriam-Webster Dictionary further refined the definition of Meme as “an amusing or interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online especially through social media.”

Dawkin’s concept developed into the hilarity that we now know as the internet culture. In reality, its hard to pinpoint the very first internet meme, but one of the earliest was the 3D dancing Baby. Creating and sharing memes on social media has greatly impacted the internet culture. We want to laugh, want to be included in an internet wide inside joke. People want to be entertained and not to have good times interrupted.
As I read the wine memes below, besides bringing a smile, I can’t help but think a glass of wine is good for your physical and mental health. With a diet largely made up of kale, avocados, and raw almonds, sipping on a glass of wine is part of my diet.

In fact, red wine with its flavonoids antioxidants helps reduce the risk of heart disease. The antioxidants in wine help lower LDL (bad cholesterol) levels and increase the production of good cholesterol. However, the flavonoid levels vary among the red wine grapes. Some wine grapes have a greater concentration of flavonoids according to researchers at the University of California, Davis. For instance, Cabernet Sauvignon has the most flavonoids. Then Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Red Zinfandel follow closely behind.
