Largest Wine Cellar 10K Run – All Inside Wine Cellar:

Over 300 runners competed in a 6 mile (10K) race in the world’s largest wine cellar on Sunday, January 20, 2019.  Covering more than 124 miles of subterranean wine catacombs, the state-owned Mileștii Mici hosts this unusual event. In particular, this wine cellar, with nearly 2 million bottles, holds the Guinness World Record for “largest wine cellar by the number of bottles”.

So no surprises at the finish line, runners were greeted with some of the finest Moldova wines.  Plus, this cellar is so large that the runners were issued maps to avoid getting lost.  In fact, it showed its underground “streets” quaintly named after different wine varieties.  In particular, this small country sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine with a population of 3.5 million is one of the few winemaking areas of the ex-Soviet Union.

Parts of the race were outside on slippery paths in the snow and ice.  But most of the race was underground with runners passing giant oak barrels of wine.  Furthermore, a surprising twist to this event was dancers, musicians, and singers wearing folk costumes performed in the darkness of the caves.  In addition, they were cheering bystanders for the passing runners. Surprisingly, a number of runners included tourists from the United States, Canada, and Europe along with the local populace. Notably, this event is billed as “the only race in Europe at a depth of 100 meters.”
