I’m A Dreamer

I’m a Dreamer. As a child, I dreamed about what I wanted to be as an adult.  Would it be to stay in farming? Or would it be something exciting, things like becoming a fireman or an engineer? What is amazing about dreaming big is that it can change.  I initially dreamed about being an engineer but that changed one day when my uncle took me for an airplane ride.  As a result, I quickly changed my dream to become a pilot. I was only 13 years old at the time.  In 1976, I earned my Air Force pilot wings and the next 30 years were amazing as a military pilot. I’m glad that I am a dreamer!

You would think that having achieved my childhood dream that was enough.  But that was not the case. I was ready to work on the next one. Furthermore, as you probably can guess it’s just as big as my pilot dream. I firmly believe dreams are important for the following reasons.

I’m A Dreamer-3 Reasons Why

Motivation

First of all, it motivates you to get out of bed every morning. Just knowing you have a dream that you want to achieve and knowing the things that you want to do to get there is a strong incentive to face the challenges of the day!  In fact, I love Steve Jobs’s quote “If you are working on something exciting that you really care about you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.”

Happiness

More importantly, if you are pursuing what you love or want, you will be happier, I know I am a much happier person.  It’s hard to contain an immense sense of fulfillment and purpose when I’m a Dreamer that turned the dream into reality!

Perseverance and Determination

The path of fulfilling that dream also teaches you not only about failure but also the value of perseverance and determination.  I’ll go back to my pilot dream.  The road to graduation was not easy.  In fact, we started with 35 pilot candidates in my class and graduated 19. My first instructor told me that I would never become a pilot.  However, this made me more determined to prove him wrong.

I spent hours “chair flying” and forcing myself to “visualize” the maneuvers and procedures to complete the training course.  The greatest comment that I received occurred on the last ride in the program.  That first instructor was assigned to my last flight which consisted of a 4 ship (plane) formation flight.  As we were taxing into the parking ramp, Ray said, “hard to believe but you are a pilot”

The moment and words are ingrained in my mind ever since. Big dreams when achieved usually have some hurdles to overcome.  My dream wasn’t easy, but it was well worth it.  I have traveled the world which would not have been possible without making my dream become reality.  Thomas Edison said it best “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

I’m A Dreamer-My Next Dream

So here I am today. I have a big dream about running my own business as a marketer.  Whether I succeed and when is yet to be determined. But I have learned through past experiences that relentless determination, perseverance despite adversity, staying consistent, and never losing sight of your vision or dream will make the impossible possible!

I do this by:

  • I have a dream
  • I have an action plan
  • I am committed to the plan and if needed adjust the plan
  • I am putting the plan into action on a daily basis

In Summary-I’m A Dreamer

Big dreams can be a spark for a major change(s) in your life. I’m a Dreamer has definitely impacted my life.  I achieved my big goal of being a pilot.  Now, I have another dream to pursue which will, if achieved. make a major change in my family’s life and help others along the way. It starts with waking up every morning determined to do one thing each day that puts your dream in motion.  A dream without action is just a dream! I’m a Dreamer that believes in setting big goals to achieve!
